Gonna party like it's my brithday...
Cos, well, it is.

Cheers to those on my f-list who said happy birthday.

Got myself a nice selection of pressies - Enchanted DVD, Dreamgirls DVD, Golden Compass DVD, I Am Legend DVD, Cranford DVD, Zack and Wiki Wii game, a book on beading and some perfume.

My brother's card made me chuckle...

(In case you can't read the caption, it says 'It's our lucky day. Some doctor is paying us £50 just to paint the inside of this old police box'.)

And as a pressie he took me to see Indy 4...

It takes a bit of getting used to because it feels different from the Indy films of old. They were films of their time (30's adventure serials) and so is this (50's B movie). It really isn't like the films of old. In fact it felt quite Tomb Raider like which is ironic in a way. I did like it though.

Some of the sets were superb and I didn't feel that what CGI there was was too intrusive. Great set pieces and fun sequences too. I'd loved the use of the ants.

The pacing was fairly good although the overly long first section did make the usual trip back to the college feel a bit cumbersome. There wasn't quite as much comedy as there is in some of the older ones and I think it could have done with a few more of these moments.

The cast were all very good. Shia wasn't at all irritating like some feared. He's as charming as he was in Transformers. Indy and Marion still have some nice sparring going on.

I liked the way they made the 'aliens' not aliens as such. Indy shouldn't be sci-fi and they managed to steer it just far enough away from that.

The call backs to the old films were nice to see, especially the 'tributes' to Henry Jones Snr and Marcus Brody. I always really liked Marcus and so I'm glad they showed the character some real respect. I'm not surprised they decided to kill the older Jones off as such - it wouldn't have been right to have him alive but not involved at all, especially during the family moments.

And I really adored him accidentally finding the Ark and never actually knowing.

Interesting to see the direct mentioning of some of the things from the Young Indy series too (have met and ridden with Pancho Villa.)

Overall, I'd give it 7/10 - not touching the brilliance of Last Crusade but not insult to the series. I'd really like to see it again now I know what to expect as regards the general 'feel' of it.
