DW 3.02 - The Shakespeare Code
One of my favourite in the new series...

  • §  What was with the boyband hair on pre-credits guy?
  • §  Two mothers? Omg! Gay agenda!
  • §  ‘How do you travel in time, what makes it go?’ – that’s it Martha, you ask the intelligent questions
  • §  The Doctor straddling the TARDIS console? Tongues WILL wag.
  • §  He failed his TARDIS test and yet he’s still flying it? Tut tut. Expect to see him on the intergalactic version of Road Wars soon.
  • §  Still on that ‘one trip only’ thing eh? Because that’s going to last...
  • §  Elizabethan  England sets are made of the win
  • §  ‘You step on a butterfly you change the future of the human race!’ ‘What if I kill my grandfather?’
  • §  The Doctor’s always got an answer though (‘Don’t step on any butterflies – what have butterflies ever done to you?’) – smart arse...
  • §  Racial issues brought up? Really thought they’d ignore that one so quite surprised. They did it well though – it was mentioned without going overboard.
  • §  The new Globe looks awesome.
  • §  I like the Smith and Jones thing. That’s their thing. Hope it stays.
  • §  ‘When you get home you can tell everyone you’ve seen Shakespeare’ ‘Then I can get sectioned!’ – Martha gets her sarcasm on.
  • §  RockStar!Shakespeare is definitely the way I like to see him.
  • §  Martha manages to do the ‘ooo! Shiny! New! Joy!’ thing without being annoying.
  • §  The science that looked like witchcraft was a great plot device.
  • §  The writer had clearly done his research with the whole ‘Love’s Labour’s Won’ deal. I do love it when they tie in and explain existing mysteries.
  • §  Slight tying in there between Martha trying to do Ye Olde English and Rose doing a Scottish stereotype
  • §  ‘I hate starting from scratch’ – He should write a companion guide entitled ‘So You’ve Decided To Journey On The TARDIS’. Would save a lot of time.
  • §  Freedonia? Yeah, the Doctor should clearly never be allowed to name stuff.
  • §  The Master of the Revels had the fakest fake beard evertm
  • §  The witches rhyming everything should have been annoying but it worked very well in the circumstances.
  • §  ‘There’s something I’m missing, Martha. Something really close. Staring me right in the face and I can’t see it’ – double meaning, eh? Obviously he hasn't grown to appreciate Martha yet. He’s still in pine mode and thinks this is a one off trip. Good to hear RTD say that from next episode he’ll actually realise that he’s grown attached to Martha too.
  • §  The Architect? Cue Matrix flashbacks.
  • §  The Doctor should really try to avoid his wide eyed crazy look when trying to calm people via the Jedi mind trick
  • §  Using Back To The Future to explain temporal flux? That’s why I love this Doctor.
  • §  Yet another mention of The Eternals? Intriguing...
  • §  Martha has a better sense of direction than the Doctor? Maybe the TARDIS landing in the wrong place is more his fault than we know!
  • §  Loved the whole power of words deal throughout the episode – the Doctor was right, words have the ability to change people’s minds, a dangerous power indeed...
  • §  Expelliarmus?! Genius! Trying to get JK Rowling to write an episode perhaps?
  • §  Again, tying in fact and fiction so well with Martha being Shakespeare’s ‘Dark Lady’
  • §  Wonder if we’ll ever get to see that meeting with Queen Elizabeth...Unfortunately I don’t think they’ll have Miranda Richardson play the quite mad version of her though.

Overall, one of the most enjoyable episodes in these new series. I love Martha – she’s genuinely smart, asks the right questions and is strong. Shakespeare was brilliantly portrayed. The story was fun, dark, mysterious and witty. The visuals were completely stunning. More like that please 10/10.

The Doctor straddling the TARDIS console? Tongues WILL wag.

Oh my, you do have an ability to say just the right (wrong) thing!

Cracking review btw

I think it's a bit kind calling it a review - more like inane ramblings! - but thanks :D

Have to admit though that I didn't notice the straddling until the second viewing...bad fangirl!

Never inane!

Besides I am rarely coherant enough to string so many thoughts together.

And I do have to say as soon as I read your line about "straddling" I immediately flashed back to the scene.

Long legs.... mmmm....
