Invasion squee
Tom Underlay.

Best. Character. Ever.

I love this guy. He's bad, he's good, he hurts people, he helps people, he loves his wife, he hands out guns, he seems to be in control, he seems on the edge of falling apart,...

Top writing and acting all round.

*Crosses more things that they get a second season*

And without spoiling the plot for anyone (since this is pure speculation on my part) does anyone else think that maybe Rose isn't Russell's daughter after all?

Oh look, a rabid fic bunny...

Great minds think alike!

I was thinking this was all wild speculation on my part then it struck me that the flower he kept was a rose and she said it gave them hope...Then there were all these wild analogies running through my head about how Rose is their hope because she's the daughter of a hybrid and human yet she seems fine (if more intuitive than most)

I am. I spent part of my day plotting it when I really should have been marking, but I prioritised.

I also noticed last night whilst watching it again that young Kira and Rose look awfully alike...They could almost be sisters ;)

I really wanna grab Shaun Cassidy and ask him.

I'm here via aingeal8c and some posts re: dS, but I can't tell you how glad I am to find someone else who finds Underlay as fascinating as I do. I think he is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever seen - not that I'm surprised with Bill Fichtner, who is just stunningly good at everything from physical comedy to quasi-drag to flat-out lunatic to soft and sensitive.

Who knew Shaun Cassidy had such a dark, lyrical side to him?

Hiya...

I watched Shaun Cassidy's American Gothic which is much darker than this, so yep, knew all about his dark side :D

I've been watching Invasion again from the beginning and it's fascinating to see all the stuff you pick up on once you have a better idea of what's going on. And I have a whole different perspective now on Tom and his motivations.

I'm writing 2 fanfics at the mo about him and Mariel. Definitely my favourite of the two couples.

I will be friending you as long as you don't mind - I need more Invasion fans on my f-list!

Oh, I watched American Gothic, too, and was just as surprised then. It just still hasn't worn off! Clearly, SC has a thing about sheriffs, although Lucas Buck is a lot less subtle and complex than Tom Underlay. Some of that's in the writing, some of it's in the acting.

And yes, it's very interesting to go back and watch again with increased knowledge. I agree that Tom and Mariel are fascinating; I kind of like Larkin (the episode when she had to walk back to civilization just cemented that for me). And I enjoy the kids, too: Jesse is a normal-looking kid, Kyra is smart and sexy but not a slut, and Rose is clearly adorable, but more than that, smart and sensitive. Russell is kind of the weak link, but I suppose being dull and slightly clueless is his purpose in the plot.

I haven't found any Invasion fanfic, although I've gone looking a couple of times. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I'm doing most of my writing and participating in Numb3rs right now, although I'm feeling the lure of Doctor Who (9th) more and more strongly.

I'd be happy to have you as a friend. I need more Invasion talk, too. No one in my circle is watching it. Well, that's a little strong, but few of them are as hooked as I am!

Clearly, SC has a thing about sheriffs...

That's pretty much the first thing I said after watching episode 1 of Invasion! Maybe he had a bad experience with one in the past :D

I know a few people don't like Mariel, but I think she's brilliantly complex and wonderfully acted too. She and Tom have great chemistry. Larkin is a bit hit and miss with me, some of the time I've loved her and sometimes they've made her too stereotypical reporter which I've found irritating. I can see how Russell can be the weak link but Eddie makes him a very likable average guy. And as you said, that's his purpose - he's the everyman, the good guy stuck in this situation. I absolutely adore Dave - they've managed to make him fun and almost comic relief without making him ridiculous.

As for the kids, I don't really have too many thoughts about Jesse to be honest. He's just there. He's been pretty underused so far. Kira is a lot more interesting. I love seeing her relationship with her dad because it gives us a whole other side of Tom. Rose is really well portrayed. That kid is some actress. I love how there seems to be so much more to her than we've been told. And I'm becoming more and more convinced that she's Tom's daughter.

I haven't found any Invasion fanfic, although I've gone looking a couple of times. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I've got one relatively short piece set after episode 6 'The Hunt' where Tom 'rescues' Mariel from Derek. On Tom's asking she leaves him to deal with Derek and I wondered why she didn't ask him later about what happened. So I'm writing a kind of tag scene.

The other one is set pre-series and is all about what happened between Tom and Mariel.

...although I'm feeling the lure of Doctor Who (9th) more and more strongly.

I spent all last summer writing 9th Doctor stories. I've got about 40 of them by now. :D I'm waiting for the 10th Doctor episodes (2 weeks to go!) to see if he relights my muse.

Well better stop there with all the waffle. I'll likely be back later after watching episode 15 to write my weekly Invasion squee post :D
